Testing for Alcoholism

There are no blood tests just for alcoholism, and it can’t be diagnosed by an X-ray. The blood tests or breath tests done to measure BAC only show if someone has alcohol in their blood. They can’t reveal if a person is actually an alcoholic.

So how does a doctor decide if a person is a problem drinker? Most likely, they’ll ask questions or have the patient fill out a survey. Some surveys contain only a few questions, while others have up to twenty-five questions. These simple tests are quite accurate, as long as the patient tells the truth. Unfortunately, people may lie or underestimate the amount they actually drink.
